Eating With Braces

It is important to avoid eating sticky and hard food in order to prevent damage to your braces. Broken brackets and wires can add to the length of your treatment. To keep your braces and appliances intact, you should avoid:

  • Chewy foods — bagels, licorice
  • Crunchy foods — popcorn, chips, ice
  • Sticky foods — caramel candies, chewing gum
  • Hard foods — nuts, hard candies
  • Foods that require biting into — corn on the cob, apples, carrots

If you choose Invisalign® for treatment, there’s good news! You don’t need to alter your diet at all, since you remove your aligners when you eat and drink! Eat all the popcorn and nuts you want!

Discomfort with Braces

It is normal to be a little sore for a day or two after getting braces. This just means that your braces are working to straighten your smile! Softer foods for the first few days can really help reduce soreness, and it’s an excellent excuse for a milkshake!

Brushing and Flossing with Braces

We understand that it is harder to keep your teeth clean with braces, which is why we provide a special disclosing toothpaste, Plaque HD! This toothpaste contains disclosing agents that color plaque build-up on teeth, allowing you to identify any harmful plaque that you may have been missed with regular brushing. It is awesome and makes your brushing experience so much easier!

Most importantly, if you ever have questions about your treatment or how to care for your braces, we encourage you to contact our Ocala or The Villages orthodontic offices and speak with a member of our team. We’re here for you and your smile!
